- I've got a couple modems that I use and I've been playing with a
- Motorola Power recently. I have upgraded to the version 4 firmware
- but don't have a manual. I can get possibly get an original manual,
- but it won't have any of the changes that the upgraded flash added.
- Is there anywhere to download a copy of this manual. I checked the
- web pages and the BBS but didn't find one.
- I would think that I'm just not looking hard enough, or maybe I've
- been spoiled by my Supra. :) I love the fact that there is a text
- manual included in the .zip of the flasher.
- One more thing about this Moto, it always connects at 28.8, but it
- drops down, sometimes way down. I normally use it for PPP connections
- to MultiTechs or Supras and don't notice the change until it has
- dropped seriously.enough so that my telnet sessions are affected. I
- ran some testing today, called into a couple of local 'boards and
- futzed around. I connected at 14.4 or 28.8, depending on the other
- modem, but ended up dropping dramatically.
- On the 14.4 connection, I dropped to 9600. On the 28.8 (a USR Courier
- Dual Standard) I dropped to 4800, still at V.34. I then called the
- number that I use for PPP, went straight to my shell account, and
- noticed the same thing after a while. I dropped to command mode
- again, hit ato1 to force a retrain, and could not get it to go any
- faster. Right now I'm connected via PPP and can download compressed
- files at about 600bytes/sec, and highly compressable text or .bmp
- files at about 4kbytes/sec. I can upload the same compressed files at
- 4kbyte/sec and the same highly compressable files at 11kbyte/sec.
- It looks to me like the Moto is taking split speed to the extreme.
- The fact that this modem isn't holding its connect speed has me
- worried, especially since I don't remember having this problem with
- any of the earlier versions of the Moto. It may be a problem with the
- commands that Win95 is sending but I've noticed slowdowns under WinNT
- also, using the modem.inf file supplied by Motorola.
- The problem is not one of overloaded circuits, because the machine I
- am using to test on is one router ethernet interface away from the
- comm server that I am calling into, and neither the router or the
- ethernet are overloaded. I'm also the only user on the machine,
- besides PPP authentication processes that root is handling, and the
- load average is around 0.10.
- If anyone else has noticed this problem on a Power with Rev 4, please
- post it here. Especially if you've found a fix.
