  11. I've got a couple modems that I use and I've been playing with a
  12. Motorola Power recently.  I have upgraded to the version 4 firmware
  13. but don't have a manual.  I can get possibly get an original manual,
  14. but it won't have any of the changes that the upgraded flash added.
  15. Is there anywhere to download a copy of this manual.  I checked the
  16. web pages and the BBS but didn't find one.  
  17. I would think that I'm just not looking hard enough, or maybe I've
  18. been spoiled by my Supra.  :)  I love the fact that there is a text
  19. manual included in the .zip of the flasher.
  20. One more thing about this Moto, it always connects at 28.8, but it
  21. drops down, sometimes way down.  I normally use it for PPP connections
  22. to MultiTechs or Supras and don't notice the change until it has
  23. dropped seriously.enough so that my telnet sessions are affected.  I
  24. ran some testing today, called into a couple of local 'boards and
  25. futzed around.  I connected at 14.4 or 28.8, depending on the other
  26. modem, but ended up dropping dramatically.  
  27. On the 14.4 connection, I dropped to 9600.  On the 28.8 (a USR Courier
  28. Dual Standard) I dropped to 4800, still at V.34.  I then called the
  29. number that I use for PPP, went straight to my shell account, and
  30. noticed the same thing after a while.  I dropped to command mode
  31. again, hit ato1 to force a retrain, and could not get it to go any
  32. faster.  Right now I'm connected via PPP and can download compressed
  33. files at about 600bytes/sec, and highly compressable text or .bmp
  34. files at about 4kbytes/sec.  I can upload the same compressed files at
  35. 4kbyte/sec and the same highly compressable files at 11kbyte/sec.  
  36. It looks to me like the Moto is taking split speed to the extreme.  
  37. The fact that this modem isn't holding its connect speed has me
  38. worried, especially since I don't remember having this problem with
  39. any of the earlier versions of the Moto.  It may be a problem with the
  40. commands that Win95 is sending but I've noticed slowdowns under WinNT
  41. also, using the modem.inf file supplied by Motorola.
  42. The problem is not one of overloaded circuits, because the machine I
  43. am using to test on is one router ethernet interface away from the
  44. comm server that I am calling into, and neither the router or the
  45. ethernet are overloaded.  I'm also the only user on the machine,
  46. besides PPP authentication processes that root is handling, and the
  47. load average is around 0.10.  
  48. If anyone else has noticed this problem on a Power with Rev 4, please
  49. post it here.  Especially if you've found a fix.
